With over 13,000 employees, the Kassel/Baunatal plant is Volkswagen AG’s second-largest facility in Germany. The plant specializes exclusively in component manufacturing and is a key supplier to the vehicle assembly plants across the entire Volkswagen Group. These plants are supplied with transmissions, body parts, and other components from Baunatal.
As part of a restructuring of logistics processes, plans were made, among other things, to build a new logistics center. This center was intended to ensure a sustainable and stable supply to production at the site while also serving as a Group-wide pilot project. Previously, materials were delivered decentralized to various unloading points. For the future, a central consolidation of deliveries at the new logistics center was planned to optimize delivery traffic.
To implement the project, logistics areas totaling over 45,500 m² were constructed in two construction phases on the approximately 130,000 m² site east of OTC 4.
Architecturally, the specially designed, projecting glass facades define the office wing with its cafeteria. The logistics halls were designed with a facade consisting of steel cassette walls and a trapezoidal steel weather shell; in some areas, translucent polycarbonate facades were also incorporated.
Logistics planning was carried out by RSE Fabrik Logistik.
