Planning for the VW Spare Parts Center began in 1988. The Group Executive Board broke new ground with this project: The project team was given only a schedule and a budget, and was free to make all decisions within those parameters. In 1991, the first building of what would later become the “OTC” was completed. In 2002, the next phase of construction saw the completion of OTC 2 and the Center for Intelligent Vehicle Components (FIB). Buildings OTC 3 and 4 followed between 2003 and 2005.
As a result, the entire complex had nearly 340,000 m² of built-up area for original replacement parts, which continue to ensure daily availability to this day and thus represent a significant economic factor for the Kassel region. The goal of the project was to proactively lay the planning foundation for a large industrial complex that would allow for future expansion.
The result of the planning was an optimal organizational structure—even within the buildings—that addressed the complexity of IT, administration, warehousing, and logistics while creating flexible and transparent structures. Solutions that are taken for granted today were implemented in terms of professional equipment and lighting for workstations, both in the offices and in the warehouses.
Ramps and bridges separate pedestrian traffic from transport and order-picking levels, and in some cases span the traffic routes at considerable heights. From urban planning perspective, the staggered arrangement of the buildings addressed the difference in elevation across the entire site and allowed the complex to blend harmoniously into the landscape.
