A new two-court sports hall is being built for Herderschule in Kassel, available for both the school and local clubs. It replaces the previous, no longer up-to-date hall and provides flexible spaces for sport, training, and events.
The site lies between the CSC 03 sports field and Herderschule across the street. It is characterized by a site feature protected by the development plan with old trees integrated into the design. The hall, about 1,100 m², is constructed in timber with larch cladding, while the ancillary building is masonry with a thermal insulation composite system. An overhanging roof above the new club grandstand shapes the southeast facade. Inside, visible wooden trusses span the hall, with the trapezoidal sheet roof openly visible and acoustically effective. The main entrance with foyer, stairs, and elevator on the northwest side provides access through a central corridor to all ancillary rooms on the ground floor: changing rooms for students and coaches, visitor toilets, and cleaning/technical rooms. Two stairwells lead to the upper floor with a multipurpose room, partitionable training rooms, a loggia, and additional changing rooms. A mezzanine allows an unobstructed view into the hall. The new building offers a modern, flexible sports infrastructure in the Unterneustadt quarter.
